Based on a new Cabinet lineup announced Wednesday, it is clear that the latest reshuffle was focused more on enhancing the Cabinet's "team spirit" rather than improving its strength. This explains why poorly performing finance and economics chiefs were allowed to stay, while highly popular Interior Minister Lee Hong-yuan was pushed out. There is no point in arguing over whether there is discord between Lee and Premier Jiang Yi-huah. Lee's abrupt removal is the best proof. According to media reports, Jiang is dissatisfied with Lee's handling of issues such as the controversy over land expropriation in Dapu, illegal guesthouses in Qingjing and funding for the 2017 Universiade. But how come Lee has enjoyed far higher approval ratings than other Cabinet members? In truth, Lee, as a political appointee, has impressed the public with his strong professional background and unique personal style. It is regrettable that such unique characteristics are not allowed in the government team. Lee's replacement exposes the administration of President Ma Ying-jeou's lack of appreciation for people of high caliber and lack of tolerance and ambition as a whole, which calls into question the government's ability to lead the country and the people.
