LONDON (AP) -- Former News of the World editor Rebekah Brooks has admitted in court that she sometimes paid public officials for information.

The ex-chief of Rupert Murdoch's U.K. newspapers said Thursday she had authorized payments "half a dozen" times, but did so only when she felt there was an overwhelming public interest in the information.

Brooks said she did not know the name of a Ministry of Defense source The Sun had paid for stories over a period of eight years. The Sun is part of the Murdoch news group she headed.

She denies conspiracy to hack phones, bribe officials and obstruct police. Six other defendants also deny a variety of charges.
