Taipei, March 10 (CNA) Around 100 barrels of solvents with a pungent smell were found dumped on a road in Taoyuan County, the county's environmental protection bureau said Monday. The bureau said it sent officials to Lungyuan Road in Lungtan as soon as it was notified of the presence of the barrels to take samples of the substance. They were joined by officials from the Lungtan Township Office and policemen. The barrels of highly alkaline solvents were maliciously dumped on a hilly site, the bureau said. It covered the barrels with waterproof canvases after collecting samples to prevent the spreading of pollution. Police tracked down suspicious vehicles in connection with the dumping of the waste and will summon the suspects for questioning. The suspects, if convicted, could be sentenced to between one and five years in prison and fined up to NT$3 million (US$98,948) for the offense. Meanwhile, the Taoyuan District Court handed out a one-year sentence to the manager and operator of a dyeing company in Kueishan, Taoyuan County, for falsely reporting release of wastewater. The company was also fined NT$900,000. (By Bien Chin-fong and Lilian Wu)
