President Ma defends services pact with China (update-1)

Taipei, March 23 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou defended his administration's services trade pact with China Sunday, saying that it is crucial to Taiwan's future economic development. In an international press conference, Ma did not promise that his administration withdraws its request from legislative ratification of the pact as demanded by the protesting students. In stead, the president urged the protesters to stop their occupation of the Legislative Yuan chamber and let the lawmakers to deliberate the pact. The students have seized the meeting chamber since last Tuesday evening, totally paralyzing the nation's legislative operations. By Maubo Chang)
