Taipei, March 24 (CNA) The front entrance to the Executive Yuan compound was cleared of protesters as of 5 a.m. Monday after police used a water cannon to disperse the crowd that swarmed the area late Sunday. Until 4:25 a.m., police officers numbering around 2,000 had tried to remove the student-led protesters by carrying them one by one onto waiting police vehicles. Even so, dozens of people were sent to hospitals for mostly non-life-threatening injuries. Tensions remained high as hundreds of people withdrew only as far as right outside the police perimeter. There were also hold-out protesters near the back entrance to the compound in central Taipei. (By Chen Chih-chung, Yuris Ku and Jay Chen)
