AINTREE, England (AP) -- Silviniaco Conti and The New One made up for disappointing results at Cheltenham last month by winning the big races on day one of the Aintree Festival on Thursday.

Silviniaco Conti (9-4) finished fourth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup after leading at the last fence but he made no mistake in the Betfred Bowl at Aintree three weeks later, holding off favorite Dynaste to win for trainer Paul Nicholls.

The New One was hampered by a falling horse in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham but had a clear ride in the Aintree Hurdle and edged Rock On Ruby and Diakali in a photo finish.

The first race over the fearsome fences used for Saturday's Grand National Steeplechase appeared to pass without incident, with Warne winning the Fox Hunters' Chase.
