COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) -- An Indian diplomat says early talks between the Sri Lankan government and minority Tamils are imperative and the government must expedite a sharing of power with the ethnic minority.

The Tamil National Alliance is seeking wider regional autonomy in areas ravaged by the civil war that ended in 2009 with the Sinhalese-dominated government defeating the Tamil Tiger rebels. But the talks on devolving power from the national government stalled in 2011.

Indian Ambassador Yashvardhan Kumar Sinha said Friday that early talks were imperative and urged the Sri Lankan government to create conducive conditions for resuming the talks.

India has interest in the status of Tamils in Sri Lanka because southern India is home to 60 million Tamils.
