MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Federal authorities have detained a mayor in the southern state of Guerrero for allegedly protecting a drug gang and involvement in at least 15 kidnappings.

Chief federal investigator Tomas Zeron said Wednesday that Feliciano Alvarez Mesino was detained Tuesday and taken to Mexico City.

Alvarez Mesino is the mayor of Cuetzala del Progreso, a mountain town near the city of Iguala, and is suspected of having links to La Familia Michoacana drug cartel.

Last week, federal authorities detained the interior secretary of Michoacan state for alleged ties to the Knights Templar drug cartel.

Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam said that Jose Jesus Reyna was arrested after investigators found evidence he met with the top leaders of the pseudo-religious gang.

He also said more public officials would be detained.
