Caught on tape kissing a married woman, conservative US congressman resists calls to step down

MONROE, Louisiana (AP) -- A Republican congressman from Louisiana who highlights his Christian faith and family devotion is refusing to step down after he was caught on tape kissing a married woman who is not his wife.

The chairman of the Louisiana Republican Party issued a blistering statement Thursday, calling on Rep. Vance McAllister to resign.

"Mr. McAllister's extreme hypocrisy is an example of why ordinary people are fed up with politics," Roger Villere said.

Pressure has mounted on McAllister, a married father of five, since the Monday disclosure of video footage from his district headquarters. The Ouachita Citizen, released videotape of him kissing a woman identified as Melissa Peacock on Dec. 23. Peacock resigned Monday from the congressional payroll.

McAllister's spokeswoman said Thursday that the congressman was not planning to step down.

According to LegiStorm, a website that tracks congressional salaries, Peacock joined McAllister's congressional staff in November, earning about $407 a week, or less than $22,000 a year. She and her husband contributed to McAllister's campaign.

McAllister's office said Thursday that "as of now, there are no plans of resignation."

He goes on to say that "a breach of trust of this magnitude can only be rectified by an immediate resignation."

McAllister's office said Thursday that "as of now, there are no plans of resignation."
