Singapore, April 11 (CNA) A vocational high school and a university from Taiwan won gold and silver medals in a Food & Hotel Asia Culinary Challenge event in Singapore on Friday. New Taipei Municipal Tam-sui Vocational High School beat 10 other teams to win the gold medal in the Dream Team Challenge category, and National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality & Tourism took silver. Chou Dun-yi, a teacher at the vocational high school, said students started to prepare for the contest six months ago, and they selected coffee beans from Alishan, Kavalan whiskey from Yilan County and other local ingredients to "let the international community see Taiwan." Lee Chiao-yi, one of the student particpants, said Taiwan's strength is its attentive service that can be tailored to the needs of customers, but Taiwan could still learn from others when it came to presentation skills and teamwork. In the 10-team Gourmet Team Challenge, meanwhile, the Taiwan Chefs Association won a bronze medal. The association said it used Taiwanese luffa gourd, mullet roe, sergestid shrimp and Taiwanese style sausages to give its dishes a Taiwanese flavor.

The competition was held in conjunction with the Food & Hotel Asia Show, an international exhibition of equipment, ingredients and supplies for the hospitality industry that began on April 8 and ended Friday. (By Lu Hsin-hui and Lilian Wu)
