WARSAW, Poland (AP) -- Poland's president has offered wide-ranging assistance to Moldova in reforming its local administration.

Bronislaw Komorowski spoke after talks Monday with Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti, on a two-day visit to Poland as his country prepares to sign an association agreement with the European Union. Poland, which carried out an overhaul of its local government after shedding communism in 1989, supports Moldova's drive to join the EU.

Timofti said Moldova is in "difficult regional circumstances" but is hopeful of cooperation with the European club. Moldova borders Ukraine, which is locked in an aggravating conflict with Russia. Moldova's separatist region of Trans-Dniester is seeking to join Russia, and has some 1,500 Russian troops on its territory.

On Tuesday Timofti visits Lodz, once a center of the textile industry, now developing new business opportunities.
