VALKENBURG, Netherlands (AP) -- Philippe Gilbert of Belgium has won the 49th Amstel Gold Race held in the hills of the southern Netherlands.

Racing for BMC, Gilbert broke away from the peloton about three kilometers (two miles) from the finish during the race's final steep ascent of the Cauberg hill, and then held on for victory as others narrowed the gap.

Sunday's win in the 251-kilometer race is Gilbert's third title, after victories in 2010 and 2011. He finished in an unofficial time of 6 hours, 25 minutes, 57 seconds.

Fellow Belgian Jelle Vanendert was second, and Australia's Simon Gerrans third, ahead of Alejandro Valverde of Spain.
