WASHINGTON (AP) -- Egypt's top diplomat says he wants to chart a new direction for the turbulent relationship between the U.S. and Cairo, especially as the Mideast undergoes regional security threats.

Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy said Friday he's not going to press U.S. officials for a specific list of needs while in Washington next week, although aid will be among the issues discussed.

The U.S. this week cleared the way to release some military aid to Egypt after uncertainty following last July's coup that overthrew President Mohammed Morsi.

But Egypt still wants more U.S. help.

Fahmy described Egypt as surrounded by security threats from nearby nations, and he predicted violence will continue in Egypt after next month's presidential elections.

He spoke to reporters in a conference call from a San Francisco-based philanthropy.
