LONDON (AP) -- England winger Andros Townsend will miss the World Cup because of a left ankle injury.

Tottenham says the 22-year-old Townsend needs surgery to repair damage to ligaments in his left ankle and will be out for 10 weeks.

Townsend has made five appearances for England and was a candidate for inclusion in the squad to go to Brazil.

England coach Roy Hodgson will announce his World Cup squad on May 12.
