Six earthquakes shake eastern Taiwan county

Taipei, May 4 (CNA) An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 occurred in waters off the coast of eastern Taiwan late Sunday, the sixth of a series of temblors detected there during the day. According to the Central Weather Bureau's earthquake report, the latest seismic activity, occurring at 8:43 p.m., was centered in an area off the coast of eastern Taiwan at a depth of 34 kilometers. The epicenter was located 14.9 kilometers southeast of Hualien County Hall. Tremors could be felt in cities and counties north of Chiayi in southern Taiwan, the report said. An intensity level of 4 was measured in Hualien City and central Hualien County, and 3 in Yilan County and Taichung City. The intensity was of the lesser level of 2 in the counties of Taitung, Nantou, Taoyuan, Miaoli, Hsinchu, Yunlin, Changhua and Chiayi, while level-one tremor was recorded in Hsinchu City, New Taipei and Chiayi City. There were no reports of damage or injuries in Hualien County even though the tremors were clearly felt, the local fire department said. Five earthquakes occurring in the same area off Hualien County earlier in the day ranged between 3 and 4 in magnitude, according to the weather bureau. (By Angela Tsai and Elizabeth Hsu)
