Taipei, May 7 (CNA) New Taipei, Taiwan's most populous city, is promoting urban farming amid its dense collection of residential buildings in a bid to encourage citizens to transform idle spaces on rooftops and in public areas into vegetable gardens. By establishing community farms, New Taipei residents can beautify their living environment while promoting organic agriculture by growing their own crops, the city's agriculture Department Commissioner Liao Jung-ching said Wednesday while visiting a hillside community in the southern Xindian District. The practice will bring food to the table along with peace of mind, Liao said, adding that small-scale urban farms can have a "healing effect" as city dwellers relieve stress by working on their farms. An American resident of the community named Tammy, who has lived in New Taipei for 30 years, said she uses fallen leaves and kitchen leftovers as fertilizer to transform a plot of waste land into a community garden for others to visit.
