Taipei, May 10 (CNA) Taiwan's semiconductor assembly and test services (SATS) market will outperform the global market again this year, driven by their focus on advanced technologies, according to a local research company. The local SATS market grew 3.7 percent to US$14.01 billion in 2013, better than the global market's 3.5 percent annual growth, Nobunaga Chai, an analyst at Digitimes Reserach, said in a recent research note. Taiwan's SATS market will continue to grow in 2014, driven by strong shipments of tablet computers and smartphones worldwide, he said, predicting the local market to expand another 5.9 percent, higher than the estimated global growth of 4.2 percent. Since 2012, Taiwan's two top IC packagers, Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. and Siliconware Precision Industries Co., have focused on advanced technologies, including wafer level packaging and flip chip manufacturing, resulting in increased revenues, Chai said. That has given them the upper hand now that handheld device shipments are strong, the analyst said. In a separate report, Gartner Inc. held a similar view, saying that the top SATS companies' focus on advanced technologies helped distance themselves from the more than 150 companies in the market. Advanced Semiconductor Engineering took an 18.9 percent global market share in 2013, followed by South Korea's Amkor Technology at 11.8 percent and Siliconware Precision Industries at 9.3 percent, according to the report. The global SATS market totaled US$25.1 billion in 2013, up 2.3 percent from the previous year, the market intelligence and advisory firm said. (By James Lee)
