Taipei, May 11 (CNA) The Taiwan preliminary of the 13th World Cosplay Championship concluded in Hsinchu County Sunday, with two local cosplayers, known as Chiu Chi and Hung Yueh Ling -- both pseudonyms -- winning the competition and a ticket to the finals in Japan.

The Taiwan Cosplay Championship is part of the World Cosplay Summit (WCS), an annual international costume play event that promotes international exchange through manga and animination-dominated pop culture in Japan. Manga is the Japanese term for comics.

This year, Taiwan will join the WCS as a formal participating country for the first time.

The Taiwan preliminary kicked off earlier in the day, attracting Hsinchu County Magistrate Chiu Ching-chun, who pledged to build the northern Taiwan county into a "Manga Dream Workshop of Taiwan."

A total of 19 teams joined the preliminary, with each made up of two people. The winners Chiu Chi and Hung Yueh Ling are a married couple who played characters in the Japanese television animation series "Tekkaman Blade" which was released in 1992.

Cosplay, short for "costume play," is a performance art in which participants wear costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character or idea that is usually identified with a unique name.

The 2014 Cosplay Championship finals will be held in Nagoya, Japan in August. (By Lin Rei-yi and Elizabeth Hsu)
