GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AP) -- The Mexican government is investigating an attack in the western state of Jalisco that killed four soldiers and wounded two, a federal official said Wednesday.

The official said the soldiers were transporting stolen gasoline they had seized when they were ambushed by gunmen. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not permitted to be quoted by name.

The soldiers were in a military truck Monday in the town of Guachinango when the assailants opened fire and intentionally crashed a pickup truck against the army vehicle setting it on fire, the official said.

He said the soldiers were transporting the recovered fuel to the federal prosecutors' office in the city of Guadalajara when they were attacked.
