SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) -- Chile's president is due to announce her plans to tackle the country's energy crunch.

President Michelle Bachelet unveiled an expanded liquefied natural gas port on Wednesday, and pointed to that as an example of clean energy that won't harm the environment or local communities.

But imported gas is costly, and the policy Bachelet is unveiling Thursday also is expected to include support for solar and wind energy and other renewable sources.

Studies show Chile must triple its energy capacity in 15 years to continue growing the economy while satisfying demand from the key mining industry.

It now depends on hydroelectric dams and imported fossil fuels for nearly all its power.
