HAMILTON, Bermuda (AP) -- The premier of Bermuda has resigned his post and been replaced by his deputy amid a campaign finance controversy in the British island territory.

Premier Craig Cannonier announced his resignation in a televised address late Monday and Michael Dunkley was sworn in Tuesday as acting premier.

The opposition had called for Cannonier and the Cabinet to resign over campaign contributions given to his party by U.S. developers seeking business opportunities in the island.

Cannonier says he has not done anything illegal but that critics have called his integrity and leadership into question and that threatens the work of his government.

He had been the head of government since December 2012 in the island that is a center of finance and a tourist destination.
