DENVER (AP) -- Vincent Harding, an adviser to Martin Luther King Jr., has died at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, according to Denver's Iliff School of Theology, where Harding taught for many years. He was 82.

Harding, who died Monday, first met King when he traveled from Chicago to Atlanta to work in the civil rights movement. Harding became an adviser and friend to both King and Coretta Scott King. He later served as the first director of what is now known as the King Center, established in Atlanta after King's death by Coretta Scott King to further their work.

Steve Klein, spokesman for the center, said in a telephone interview Wednesday that Harding was a voice for social change and an important historian of the civil rights movement.
