Taipei, May 23 (CNA) Taiwan's agricultural sector suffered losses amounting to an estimated NT$24.1 million (US$809,760) from the recent unusually heavy rain, according to the latest statistics released by the Council of Agriculture Friday. Central Taiwan was the worst affected area, with Yunlin county sustaining losses of NT$11.4 million, followed by Taichung city and Changhua county, which reported losses of around NT$6.79 million and NT$4.63 million, respectively, the council said. Mushrooms, water melons, green soybeans, cantaloupes, tomatoes and leafy vegetables were the most heavily affected by the rain, according to the council. Heavy downpours have continued in different parts of Taiwan over the past few days as a new weather front enveloped the island, according to the Central Weather Bureau. After heavy rain soaked Taichung, along with Changhua and Nantou counties, the bureau also issued an extreme torrential rain warning Wednesday for the Greater Taipei area as a result of the weather front.
