DUBLIN (AP) -- Steffon Armitage has been voted the European Player of the Year for 2014 after playing a starring role in French club Toulon's successful defense of its Heineken Cup title.

The English flanker, who was man of the match in Toulon's 23-6 win over Saracens in Saturday's final, beat retiring teammate and 2013 winner Jonny Wilkinson for the award. Saracens trio Chris Ashton, Schalk Brits and Jacques Burger were also on the five-man shortlist.

Armitage, who forced more turnovers throughout the tournament than any other player, says Monday: "This is a great honor, and with us winning another Heineken Cup as well, everything has come together at the right time,"

The 28-year-old Armitage has been overlooked by England's national team because he plays his domestic rugby outside the country.
