BEIRUT (AP) -- Syria's ambassador to Lebanon says the upcoming Syrian presidential election will provide a resounding answer to all those who doubt his government will prevail in its current conflict.

Ali Abdel-Karim Ali expects a huge turnout for the vote scheduled to be held in Syria on June 3 and abroad on May 28. He says the world fears the results of the Syrian election, and that is why they criticize and oppose it.

Ali spoke in a rare interview with The Associated Press in Beirut Monday.

President Bashar Assad is all but guaranteed a victory in an election described by Western leaders as a mockery.

Opposition groups are boycotting the vote, being held during a civil war that has killed more than 160,000 people and displaced millions of others.
