Singapore, May 31 (CNA) Taiwan is earning recognition for its contribution to regional peace and stability, as evidenced by the good international responses regarding its handling of fishing disputes with Japan and the Philippines, an expert in international relations said Saturday. In handling such disputes, solutions were possible because Taiwan opted to focus on protecting the fishing rights of Taiwanese fishermen and toned down the sensitive sovereignty issue, said Ding Shuh-fan, head of the Institute of International Relations at National Chengchi University. Ding was commenting on speeches by U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and Australian Defense Minister David Johnston at the 2014 Shangri-La Dialogue being held by the International Institute for Strategic Studies in Singapore. Hagel cited a proposed fisheries agreement between Taiwan and the Philippines as an example of how to reduce tensions and resolve disputes peacefully. Johnston, meanwhile, said Taiwan's talks with China and Japan were a good example of conflict resolution. (By Lu Hsin-hui and Y.F. Low)
