Taipei, May 31 (CNA) This year's Neighbor's Day activities in Taoyuan County kicked off Friday, with the aim of forging closer ties among the people in the county's communities. From May 30-June 15, communities and civic organizations in Taoyuan County's 13 cities and townships are staging a series of activities featuring the distinguishing characteristics of each area and based on the theme "say hello and share with your neighbors." The events will include carnival parades and displays of exotic dishes as a way of encouraging greater interaction among neighbors, according to the county's culture bureau. Taoyuan Magistrate Wu Chih-yang said many residents in apartment complexes and high-rise buildings have been reaching out to each other through actions like collecting signatures and clapping hands in a show of solidarity. Neighbors' Day is an annual event initiated in France and it is being celebrated in more than 1,400 cities in 36 countries, drawing the participation of over 10 million people, according to Taoyuan culture bureau head Benjamin Tchuang-mo Tchang. The culture bureau also said it is offering free T-shirts and limited edition art items to members of the public who collect the most stamps in a signing-in activity. The bureau is urging people who are interested in Taoyuan's Neighbor's Day events to log on to its website or its Facebook page for detailed information. (By C.C. Chiu and Flor Wang)
