On Monday, MediaTek (2454) announced May revenue of NT$ 19.33 billion for a monthly growth rate of 1.22% and an annual growth rate of 76.83%. Cumulative April and May revenue have already reached NT$38.42 billion, which is only NT$13.1 billion less than the low end of MediaTek’s earnings forecast of NT$51.5 to NT$55.2 billion. There is a high likelihood of Q2 results beating the forecast.

Primary growth momentum will come from high smartphone demand from emerging markets and the complete integration of acquisition MStar’s financials. Q2 gross profit margin is forecast at 47.5% to 49.5% and operating expense ratio is estimated at 23%-27%.

In Q1, smartphones accounted for 55% to 60% of revenue, feature phones accounted for 5%-10%, optical storage and digital appliances accounted for 15% to 20%, and wireless networking chips accounted for 5% to 10%.

MediaTek will aggressively develop the 4G LTE market this year, releasing products in the latter part of the year including mass production of the world’s first 8 core LTE single chip MT6595 in Q3. Mass production of 64 bit 4 core and 8 core single chips will also begin in Q4 and 20nm LTE chips are in the planning stage. MediaTek’s LTE chip shipments this year are expected to surpass the 15 million unit level with overall 4G progress falling behind competitor Qualcomm by only one to two quarters.
