JERUSALEM (AP) -- Israel's parliament on Tuesday chose Reuven Rivlin, a veteran politician and supporter of the Jewish settlement movement, as the country's next president, putting a man opposed to the creation of a Palestinian state into the ceremonial but largely influential post. Here is a look at highlights of his life and career.

-- Studied law at Hebrew University of Jerusalem

-- First elected to the Knesset, or parliament, in 1988.

-- Served as Minister of Communications from 2001 to 2003.

-- Chosen as speaker of the Knesset in 2003 and 2009.

-- Has served as chairman of Betar Jerusalem Sports Association and on the board of trustees of the Israel Museum.
