Taipei, June 15 (CNA) Eastern and southern Taiwan should be on guard against torrential rains brought by Tropical Storm Hagibis, which is forecast to make land at Shantou, Fujian Province in Southern China Sunday night, the Central Weather Bureau said Sunday. Although the storm is expected to spare Taiwan, the circulating currents on its rim are expected to bring downpours to Hengchun in Pingtung County, Taitung County, Orchid Island and Green Island off the coast of eastern Taiwan, reported the bureau. The island of Kinmen, which is beyond the radius of Hagibis, will see heavy rain, too, on Sunday and Monday, according to the bureau. Unstable weather is predicted throughout the entire island in the upcoming days, with showers and thunderstorms expected in Hualian County, Taitung County and counties in central and southern Taiwan. Meanwhile, scattered showers and thunderstorms were forecast for northern Taiwan. By 11.30 a.m. Sunday, the storm, centered 280 km south of Kinmen with winds over 15 meters per second extending 100 km from its center, is moving north at 11 km per hour, reported the bureau. Further, sea warnings, issued late Saturday, could be lifted as early as Monday afternoon, said the bureau. (By Maubo Chang)
