Taipei, June 18 (CNA) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday that it is happy to see Japan's support for Taiwan's bid to join Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a U.S.-initiated trade bloc. "We are happy to see Japan display goodwill," said ministry spokeswoman Anna Kao, referring to Japan's first-ever comments welcoming Taiwan's bid, made earlier in the day. Kuni Sato, spokesman for Japan's Foreign Ministry, said that the TPP is intended to be open to all Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation members, and Japan thinks Taiwan's intent to join is "a good thing." Asked if the comment meant Japan welcomes Taiwan's bid, Sato said "yes," adding that that is one interpretation of his comments. Taiwan has said that it will benefit all parties if it is allowed into the regional trade bloc. Kao on Wednesday highlighted close exchanges in trade and economics between Taiwan and Japan, expressing confidence that the two countries will strengthen their cooperative relationship as Taiwan ups its efforts to enter the TPP.
