Taipei, June 19 (CNA) Aung Pe Than, head of the Ayeyarwady Trade and Investment Representative Office of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, arrived in Taipei Thursday for a week-long visit in a bid to improve trade and economic links between Taiwan and his region. During his stay in Taiwan, he is scheduled to meet with trade and economics officials, business people and academics. He will also visit high-tech companies in Hsinchu Science Park. In addition to improving trade and investment between the two sides, Aung said he is also interested in promoting youth exchanges between his country and Taiwan. "Passing on our experiences (to the younger generation)... and giving them a chance. That's more important than any other thing in the world," he said. "Especially we do not want them to make the mistakes that we already did," he noted, referring to the political conflicts and tribal strifes that have plagued his country for a long time. Ayeyarwady Region is a region of Myanmar occupying the delta region of the Ayeyarwady River (Irrawaddy River), bordering Yangon Region to the east, and the Bay of Bengal to the south and west. With a population of 6.5 million, it is Myanmar's most populous region. (By Bien Chin-feng and S.C. Chang)
