NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) -- A Chinese firm has launched construction of a $39 million port project in the Bahamas.

China Harbor Engineering Company is overseeing the project on Abaco island as part of its first investment in the Bahamas.

Government officials say they expect the port to begin operating in two years on the second largest island in the Bahamas.

The project is being funded by the Bahamian government and the Export-Import Bank of China.

Construction began on Friday.
