New Taipei to hold lantern release party for panda birthday

Taipei, June 24 (CNA) As Taipei Zoo's Yuanzai, the first giant panda cub born in Taiwan, will soon turn one year old, the New Taipei Tourism and Travel Department is set to hold a birthday party for it July 5 in Pingxi, featuring the release of sky lanterns.

The department said that a 4.5-meter sky lantern in the shape of a giant panda and 150 small panda-shaped sky lanterns measuring 1.2 meters will be released at an elementary school in Pingxi to celebrate the animal's birthday.

Yuanzai fans can apply to participate in the sky lantern release by paying NT$399 (US$13.33) for a sky lantern and other gifts, including two panda-shaped meal boxes and a travel book featuring 12 stories about New Taipei, according to the department.

The meal box has been designed by the New Pingxi Coal Mine Museum and will contain popular local dishes, the department added.

A total of 150 sky lanterns will be available for online applications, which will start from Wednesday on the department's official website. (By Sunrise Huang and Evelyn Kao)
