TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) -- A defense lawyer says 16 of his clients have been convicted of theft and destruction of property for burning down an American school in Tunisia, and sentenced to two years in prison.

Anwar Ouled Ali says two others received suspended sentences on Tuesday while four were acquitted for lack of evidence.

The school was looted and razed after some 2,000 Tunisians attacked the nearby U.S. embassy in Tunis on Sept. 14, 2012, over a U.S. movie that insulted Islam. Four of the attackers died when the presidential guard was sent in to disperse the protesters.

Footage of the attack later circulated online and was used to arrest a number of suspects.

A separate trial for those accused of involvement in the embassy attack is continuing.
