FORTALEZA, Brazil (AP) -- The Netherlands and Mexico were level at 0-0 at halftime in the second round of the World Cup on a hot afternoon in northeastern Brazil.

Referee Pedro Proenca briefly halted play just after the 30-minute mark for a cooling break, allowing both teams to rehydrate.

Mexico had the best chances of the first half at the Arena Castelao, peppering Jasper Cillessen's goal with shots.

The Netherlands had an early setback when midfielder Nigel de Jong limped off injured in the ninth minute. He was replaced by defender Bruno Martins Indi, who was playing his first match since getting a concussion in the second group match.

Mexico is trying to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since it hosted the tournament in 1986.
