Eight-year-old girl acts as translator for parents

Chen Hsiao-fan studies at Dong An Elementary School in Pingzhen City. Their parents both are Indonesian and can’t read Chinese. Chen is eight years old and she reads more than one hundred books every semester to act as the translator for her parents. Her Chinese and Indonesian are both well now.

Chen’s father Chen Fu-an and her mother Chen Mei-hua opens a diner to sell the Indonesian food in Pingzhen City after marriage. They can listen and speak Chinese well but they can’t read Chinese. They don’t have spare time to learn how to read Chinese because they have to run a restaurant. Eight-year-old Chen longs for learning to recognize more and more words to help her parents. She borrows at least one hundred books from library every semester. She can translate for her parents no matter Chinese and Indonesian, becoming their right-hand assistance in life.

In addition to the schoolwork, we also encourage them to read more after class. Chen had borrowed more than one hundred books this semester, thus she can recognize many times works than other classmates and becomes the right-hand assistance for her parents in life, the project manager of Taoyuan County Education Volunteer Alliance Liu Mei-lin said.
