Taipei, July 7 (CNA) Taiwan's Asustek Computer Inc. reported on Monday lower-than-expected growth in consolidated sales in the second quarter. In an e-mailed statement, the company said it posted consolidated sales of NT$33.91 billion (US$1.13 billion) in June, up only 0.4 percent from the year-earlier level and down 8.65 percent from May. For the second quarter, consolidated sales were down 4.66 percent from the previous quarter to NT$105.19 billion, a five-quarter low. Its brand sales during the April-June period totaled NT$95.5 billion, lower than the NT$105 billion expected by the market. Asustek attributed the disappointing figures to weakening global demand for tablet and notebook computers and a supply chain for smartphones that "was not as smooth as planned." Second-quarter shipments of its biggest money-making products were lower than expected, the company said, promising more detailed information at its next investor conference on Aug. 12. Asustek shares closed up 1.59 percent at NT$352 in Taipei on Monday before the sales announcement. (By James Lee)
