Taipei, July 11 (CNA) A month-long festival of culture and the arts opens Saturday in Daxi Township, Taoyuan County in northern Taiwan to showcase traditional religious and cultural practices and arts and crafts. Taoyuan County Magistrate Wu Chih-yang invited people to visit Daxi for the festival, which runs through Aug. 10, at a press conference Friday. It will be the last time Daxi holds the annual festival as a township because the area will be renamed Daxi District after Taoyuan is upgraded to a special municipality in December. The historical town, which served as an important trading post in the 19th century, will continue and expand the festival after the upgrade, Wu pledged. This year, a series of activities have been organized for the festival, including a procession around the township by a deity widely worshipped in Taiwan to bring it good luck and various exhibitions to display paintings, ancient and modern farming tools and items made of wood. Daxi, known for its wood crafts, was named one of the Top 10 Small Tourist Towns by the Tourism Bureau in March 2012. (By Chiu Chun-chin and Elizabeth Hsu)
