Taipei, July 19 (CNA) The family of a Japanese in a coma has called for public donations to help transport him back home in an emergency medical charter plane. The man, identified as Kiyoshi Kawauchi, boarded a plane at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport for home July 5. He became ill during the flight, prompting the pilot to bring the plane back to Taiwan, whereupon he was taken to Landseed Hospital in Taoyuan County. His wife and daughter came to Taiwan to see him as soon as they were informed of the situation. Kawauchi remains in a coma and has shown no improvement after two weeks of observation and treatment. His family wants to take him back to Japan on a medical charter flight for further treatment. They said they can foot the bill for the medical expenses incurred in the Taiwanese hospital, but hope to solicit donations to help pay for the medical evacuation. Landseed Hospital said Kawauchi has shown signs of brain stem hemorrhage and is unconscious. He remains in the hospital's intensive care unit. (By Chiu Chun-chin and Lilian Wu)
