Taipei, July 20 (CNA) A Taiwanese banana grower in the southern county of Chiayi won the title of "banana king" Sunday for his techniques for cultivating high-quality bananas. Liu Jui-yuan, who has been growing the fruit for about half a century, was named champion in a contest organized by the Jhuci Township Office. More than 40 growers participated in the contest. Liu uses a method of bagging the developing bananas and eschews the use of pesticides. Using soybeans as fertilizer, he is able to grow exceptionally sweet and tasty bananas. Lin Chien-ming and Chiu Chuang-ta won the second and third places, respectively. Each hand of bananas grown by the participants weighed more than 20 kg, with the heaviest reaching 42.5 kg. Experts determined the winning entries by evaluating the appearance, weight, aroma, color, taste and sweetness of the fruit. (By Elaine Hou)
