Taipei, July 21 (CNA) A land warning was expected for Typhoon Matmo just past midnight on Tuesday, hours after authorities issued a sea warning for the typhoon as it headed directly for eastern Taiwan. The sea warning was issued at 5:30 p.m. Monday, and by 8:30 p.m., Matmo was 600 kilometers southeast of Eluanbi, Taiwan's southern tip. It was traveling north-northwest at a speed of 23 km per hour with sustained winds of 126 kph and gusts of 162 kph, according to the Central Weather Bureau. The typhoon has moved northward from its projected path, meaning it could make landfall in the northeastern county of Yilan between 2:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, the bureau said. Starting Tuesday afternoon, extremely torrential rain and strong winds are possible in the mountains of northern, northeastern and central Taiwan. Rain is likely to increase in southern Taiwan the following day. The inclement weather is expected to drop off late Thursday, as Matmo moves further away from Taiwan.
