Taipei, July 22 (CNA) The eye of Typhoon Matmo is expected to make landfall in eastern Taiwan early Wednesday morning, with a land warning for the storm likely to be lifted Thursday at the earliest, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB). The CWB said in an update released at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday that Matmo had picked up speed in the last three hours, bringing its center to just 360 kilometers south-southeast of Hualien. It was moving in a northwesterly direction at 22 kilometers per hour, the CWB said. Taiwan will fall under Matmo's influence beginning at around 3 or 4 p.m. Tuesday, with the eye of the storm making landfall in Yilan or Hualien County early Wednesday morning, the bureau said. It forecast that the typhoon will exit Taiwan via Hsinchu or Miaoli County late Wednesday night or early Thursday. The land warning, which was issued early Tuesday, could be lifted during the day Thursday, it said. The storm will be at its most powerful in Taiwan late Tuesday and much of Wednesday, with downpours and gusty winds expected for most of the island. (By Angela Tsai and Jay Chen)
