Taipei, July 22 (CNA) A 90-year-old Taipei woman complained Tuesday that she was unable to understand why her divorce case was overruled by the Taiwan High Court, despite the fact that she and her husband have been separated for more than 20 years. The woman, identified only by her surname of Yu due to privacy protection, voiced her helplessness at a press conference held by civic groups devoted to the promotion of women's rights. Yu said she married her husband in 1948 but described him as a chauvinist. She said she suffered physical and verbal abuse from her husband until she decided to move from Taoyuan to Taipei in 1980, where she has since been living with her first son. After the separation, she asked for a divorce many times but failed to win her husband's agreement. This eventually forced her to file a lawsuit at the Taoyuan District Court, which approved her petition, Yu said. However, Yu's husband appealed and the high court overruled the district court verdict in January this year, ruling that there was evidence the couple had taken trips together during their separation and that the marriage had "no major flaws." Asked why she insisted on getting a divorce, the senior said she does "not want to have any links with the man." Yu has now taken her appeal to the Supreme Court. (By Liu Shih-yi and Elizabeth Hsu)
