Taipei, July 27 (CNA) Five days after a TransAsia plane crashed in Sisi Village, Penghu County, the cordon placed by police surrounding the crash site was lifted Sunday. Owners of the ten houses that were damaged by the ill-fated plane began to fix broken roofs, move out broken furniture and clean their houses and yards. All wreckage from the plane has been moved to an air force base near Magong Airport and bricks from the damaged houses have been piled neatly on the sides of the roads by soldiers called in to help with the rescue operation. Additionally, fire engines from a local fire department spread water to rid the crash site of the strong odor from airplane fuel, while soldiers helped with the disinfection of houses in the village. Also, families of the victims gathered at a funeral parlor to arrange the funeral service for the dead. A total of 48 people died in the crash. Investigators have examined the trees which were believed to have been struck by the TransAsia plane before the plane plunged into a residential area in Sisi Village and exploded into a fireball on the evening of July 23. The plane, arriving from Kaohsiung with 54 passengers and 4 crew members, approached the Magong Airport during a thunderstorm when visibility was reduced and crashed beyond the end of the runway.
