Taipei, July 28 (CNA) The speaker of the New York City Council is leading a delegation to Taiwan to promote bilateral relations and strengthen bilateral cooperation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Monday in a statement. During her visit that began Monday and lasts through Saturday, Melissa Mark-Viverito is scheduled to call on officials at the ministries of foreign affairs, economic affairs, and health and welfare, as well as at the Taipei City Government and the semi-official Straits Exchange Foundation, the statement said. Mark-Viverito will also meet with her counterparts from the Taipei City Council, head to the Hsinchu Science Park and visit Taiwanese computer makers Asustek Computer Inc., the ministry said. Her delegation includes council members Vincent Gentile, Peter Koo, Robert Cornegy Jr., Julissa Ferreras and Vanessa Gibson, the ministry said. This is Mark-Viverito's first visit to Taiwan, which the ministry said it expects will help advance the relationships between Taiwan and the biggest city in the United States. (By Elaine Hou)
