Taipei, July 30 (CNA) Taiwan could see occasional downpours in most parts of the island and heavy seas in coastal areas due to the effects of the outer rim of Tropical Storm Nakri, the Central Weather Bureau said Wednesday. Nakri could trigger high waves off northern and southwestern Taiwan, the bureau said, cautioning that ships in these regions should be on high alert. Strong winds could occur, especially in waters north of Taiwan, with wind speeds reaching 60-90 kph, it said. Northern, northeastern, central and southern Taiwan could experience occasional heavy rain, forecasters said. As of 5 p.m., the storm was centered about 860 km east of Taiwan's southernmost tip of Eluanbi, moving in a northwesterly direction at a speed of 21 kph. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 64.8 kph, with gusts reaching 90 kph, the bureau said. Another tropical storm, Halong, is located 2,770 km east-southeast of Eluanbi, moving in a west-northwesterly direction at a speed of 14 kph. However, it is unlikely to affect the weather in Taiwan in the coming days, the bureau said. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
