15 killed, 228 injured in Kaohsiung multiple explosions (update)

Taipei, Aug. 1 (CNA) Fifteen people, including five fire fighters, were killed and 228 others injured in the multiple gas explosions in the southern city of Kaohsiung, according to the municipality's fire department. Premier Jiang Yi-huah, who rushed to the disaster response center to handle the aftermath of multiple gas explosions, also said that fire fighters from the neighboring Tainan City and Pingtung County, as well as hundreds of soldiers were called to help with the rescue efforts. President Ma Ying-jeou also ordered "full-gear rescue efforts," The worst accident ever happened in Kaohsiung began with gas leaks in the sewage system of city's Cianjhen District, leading to multiple explosions late Thursday night, Premier Jiang said. The injured were rushed to several hospitals for treatment. The cause of the gas leak has not yet been confirmed. The number of casualty may keep increasing as rescue efforts are still on going, according to the fire department. (By James Lee)
