Taipei, Aug. 3 (CNA) New Taipei plans to have 300 YouBike stations and 8,000 public bikes available around the city by the year 2016, New Taipei Mayor Eric Chu said Sunday. This year alone will see the installation of 60 YouBike rental stations with 1,600 bikes. "Today is an important transportation landmark for New Taipei," Chu said at the opening of an automated YouBike rental spot at Xike Railway Station in Xizhi District. By introducing the system that has already proven a hit in neighboring Taipei, Chu said his municipality has formally entered a new era of public transportation that he touted as "Green Sharing." Before the Xike rental kiosk opened, New Taipei had only six YouBike rental locations with 200 bikes, all located on the border with Taipei. As of the end of June, Taipei City has 160 YouBike stations with 5,265 bikes, according to city government websites. New Taipei previously introduced a system called NewBike, which was not compatible with Taipei's YouBike network. Chu said NewBike rental spots, currently only located in Banqiao District, will be converted to be YouBike compatible within two years. The urban bike rental service integration began after a half-year study launched in January on the use of public bikes in the greater Taipei area, according to the New Taipei Transportation Department. Research data shows that over 50 percent of citizens has the need to use public bicycles traveling between New Taipei and Taipei, the department said. (By Sunrise Huang and Elizabeth Hsu)
