Taipei, Aug. 4 (CNA) Cash donations to support relief efforts following multiple gas explosions in Kaohsiung late last week have reached NT$960 million (US$31.8 million), the latest official data showed Monday. Kaohsiung's Social Affairs Bureau has received 9,000 donations from a diverse group of donors, from major enterprises, overseas Taiwanese businesses, and central and local governments, to entertainers and religious groups. The actual figures could be higher, the bureau said, estimating that if small cash donations and relief supplies were taken into account, the donations would total more than NT$1 billion, according to the bureau. The FamiPort donation program of FamilyMart, meanwhile, has collected about NT$110 million, with most of the donations coming from the Kaohsiung and Pingtung areas. The funds will be handed over to the Social Affairs Bureau to help those affected recover from the disaster. As of Monday evening, 28 people were confirmed to have been killed in the explosions and 305 were injured. Two people are still missing. (By Wang Shwu-fen, Yang Su-min, Jeff Chang and Huang Po-chun)
